Your Summit NJ General Dentist Discusses Tartar

Tartar on the teeth is a common problem that most dentists face on a daily basis. Poor hygiene is the most common cause of tartar concerns. Here’s what you need to know.

What is Tartar?

Tarter is also referred to as calculus. This rough, porous buildup forms on the teeth below the gum line. It is plaque that remains on the teeth and hardens. It is often yellow or brown in color.

Almost 70 percent of adults currently have some sort of tartar on the teeth. Those who smoke are even more at risk.

Tartar is a Serious Issue

Tartar is not immediately dangerous but can lead to serious problems in the future. Tartar creates a nice surface for plaque to stick to. This leads to more bacteria which creates cavities and irritates the gum. Tartar also stains easily due to its porous nature.

Treatment

There are two strategies for dealing with tartar. First, you need to remove the existing tartar then you need to prevent it from occurring. The dentist or dental hygienist is the best person to remove tartar. They have special instruments that will remove it below the gumline and on the teeth. This is called scaling.

Then, adopt proper oral health habits to prevent future tartar buildup. This includes brushing twice a day and floss at least once. Using an electric toothbrush might be the best option, especially for an older adult or child. You can also use toothpaste with tartar control. An effective rinse will also help to kill the bacteria in the mouth.

Avoid sugary or starchy foods as these can lead to additional plaque buildup. If you do indulge, make sure you brush afterward. Finally, you need to ensure that you are visiting the dentist twice a year. That way if there is any tartar on the teeth, they can help to remove it and restore your teeth to their healthy standing once again.
