Dental Cleanings
Twice-yearly dental cleanings are an essential part of maintaining great oral health. Having a cleaning performed by a professional hygienist can help remove plaque that may have hardened in those "hard to reach areas", even if you brush and floss on a daily basis.
How it's done:
Your dental cleaning will last between 30 and 60 minutes. Most patients find that it does not cause any pain or discomfort. Typically, one of our scheduled dental hygienists will perform the cleaning, and Dr. Flynn-Nyktas will come in for examination at the end.
Overall, there are two important steps to a cleaning. The first step is called "scaling the teeth," where the tartar and plaque are removed from the surface of the teeth. This will be performed with either manual or electric tools, depending on location, severity, and hygienist preference. The pockets of the gums will also be targeted, to remove any buildup that may occur there.
The second step is polishing to remove any final plaque and buff the teeth. Polishers generally have several different sized heads to clean hard to reach places.
