Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a restorative process in which natural tooth-colored resin adheres to a tooth and then is cured with a specialized ultraviolet light. Bonding is a cheaper, faster option than full crowns or veneers, and thus can be a great option for making small cosmetic improvements to your smile. Also unlike veneers or crowns, bonding can usually be performed within a single visit to Dr. Flynn-Nyktas' Summit office, as nothing has to be prepared at a dental lab. In addition, the process of bonding requires removing less of the tooth's structure than in crowns or veneers. However, because bonding does not last as long as some other restorations, and is less resistant to stains, it is usually not chosen for major restorations, but more for small cosmetic touch-ups.

How it's done:

The dental bonding process typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes to complete, per tooth. First, Dr. Flynn-Nyktas will determine what shade your teeth are to select a resin that will blend naturally. Then the doctor will prepare the teeth to accept the bonding material easier. This can include a roughening of the surface or the application of a liquid conditioner to the tooth. Finally, the doctor will apply resin to the tooth and cure it using an ultraviolet light. For final touches, she will then shape and polish the resin, ensuring it is a great fit for your smile.
