Summit NJ Root Canal

A root canal procedure, also known as endodontic procedure, is a process used to save and repair a badly damaged or infected tooth. Usually, the damaged inside of the tooth (called the pulp) becomes infected or inflamed as a result of tooth decay, repeated dental procedures on the same tooth, or traumatic damage. The process involves the removal of the damaged area of the tooth. Afterwards, the good parts of the tooth are cleaned and disinfected and then filled and sealed.

Steps in a root canal procedure

If your tooth has been causing you pain for quite some time, you should consult with your dentist. If your dentist recommends that you need a root canal procedure, expect the following to occur:

1. X-ray

If your dentist suspects that you will need a root canal procedure, he or she will first x-ray the area to see the extent of the tooth decay. Your dentist may need to take more than 1 x-ray to fully assess the degree of damage to your tooth.

2. Anesthesia

After examining the x-rays, your dentist will put you under local anesthesia. However, if your dentist discovers that your tooth is already dead and is no longer sensitive, you may not need to use a local anesthetic.

3. Pulpectomy/Removing the damaged portion of the tooth (pulp)

A rubber sheet (dam) will be placed around the affected tooth to ensure that it remains dry during treatment. It also prevents the swallowing or breathing in of any chemicals.

The tooth will be opened through the crown to access the soft tissue located at the center of the tooth. All infected pulp will be removed afterwards.

4. Disinfecting the area

After the pulpectomy, the dentist cleans the area so that it will be easy to fill. This part of the treatment could take several hours to complete and may require several visits.

5. Filling

The opened roots of your tooth are filled and sealed off with cement. Sometimes, you might need a crown to cover your tooth after your root canal procedure to prevent the tooth from fracturing.

The success rate of root canal procedures is around 90%. After your root canal procedure, it is advisable to maintain good oral hygiene in order for your treated tooth to last longer.
