In order to treat a cavity, Dr. Flynn-Nyktas will first have to remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then seal (or fill) it with another substance. This entire process is called "placing a filling." There are many materials that can be used for fillings, but in our Summit NJ office, we exclusively use composite fillings.
Composite fillings are also known as tooth colored fillings since they have the ability to closely match the color of your natural smile. These fillings have been found to be extremely durable when placed in small to medium cavities, and typically require less removal of tooth compared to other filling types. Because of their natural look and feel, they are also perfect for placement in more visible teeth, like the ones at the front of your mouth.
When can a composite filling be used for?
- Decayed tooth (i.e. cavity)
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Decreasing the gap between teeth
How it's done:
After Dr. Flynn-Nyktas numbs the area where the filling will be placed, perhaps using the DentalVibe device, she will remove any decayed portions of the teeth. A special substance that helps open up the pores of the teeth and create a stronger bond with the filling with then be placed and cured with a special high-intensity light. Following this, the composite resin will be applied in thin layers to slowly form the filling. After it has hardened, the composite will be smoothened and shaped slightly so that it is comfortable and fits your bite.
