Tooth Extractions
A dental extraction involves the removal of a tooth from your mouth, and it is typically recommended only when other forms of treatment are no longer viable. Our Summit dentist, Dr. Flynn-Nyktas, is committed to exploring all possible treatment options before resorting to an extraction. However, in cases where the tooth is damaged beyond repair, extraction becomes necessary to preserve the health and comfort of your mouth.
Reasons for Tooth Extraction
There are several common reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted by our Summit dentist:
• Severe tooth decay or infection: When a tooth is decayed or infected to the point that a filling, crown, or root canal cannot save it, extraction is the best option to prevent the spread of infection.
• Advanced gum disease: Periodontal disease can cause the supporting tissues and bone structures around a tooth to deteriorate. In some cases, extraction is necessary to prevent further damage.
• Obstruction of other teeth: Sometimes a tooth needs to be removed because it is blocking another tooth from coming in properly or must be extracted to make space for orthodontic treatment.
• Wisdom teeth: These are often extracted either before or after they come in to prevent crowding, misalignment, or other complications.
The Tooth Extraction Procedure
During the procedure, Dr. Flynn-Nyktas will first administer a local anesthetic to numb the area around the affected tooth. This ensures that you won’t feel any pain during the extraction. While you may experience pressure as the tooth is being removed, the process itself is typically quick, lasting just a few minutes.
Post-Procedure Care
After the extraction, it is normal to experience a small amount of bleeding at the site. A gauze pad will be placed over the area to manage this, and you will receive detailed post-operative instructions from our Summit dentist. These instructions will cover important topics such as managing discomfort, following a soft-food diet, and knowing when to change the gauze. It’s essential to carefully follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth recovery.
If you experience heavy or prolonged bleeding, or have any concerns after your procedure, don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Flynn-Nyktas and the team at our Summit dentist office by calling (908) 522-1155. Your comfort and safety are our top priorities, and we are always available to address your questions and concerns.
