Summit NJ General Dentist Discusses When a Child’s Tooth Takes a Hit

Many children will suffer from a knocked out tooth or hard hit to the mouth. Here’s what you need to know if your child becomes a victim of a sports accident or other mishap involving the teeth.

Before Anything

The most important thing to do is remain calm. There is no reason to get the child worked up more than they already are. Take a minute to assess your child’s mouth. If there is more damage than a knocked out tooth, you will need to take your child to a hospital or doctor to have the face and mouth examined. Otherwise, it is time to make a call to your dentist.

Baby Teeth

If the child’s baby tooth has been knocked loose but is still intact, call your dentist for advice. Most likely, you will be told to put the child on a soft diet and allow the tooth to re-implant into the jaw. If the injury is severe, it might be recommended that you get an x-ray. This can help determine if there has been any nerve or secondary tooth damage.

If the child’s baby tooth has been knocked out, you don’t need to panic. Most times there will be no permanent effect for the child. For a short time, it may cause a temporary speech change. Your dentist can advise you with further instructions.

Permanent Tooth

If your child’s permanent tooth gets knocked out, you need to get an emergency appointment with the dentist. It is imperative that you arrive within 30 minutes with the tooth if possible. This gives the dentist the best chance of successfully re-implanting the tooth.

Here are the steps you should follow:
1. Recover the tooth.
2. Rinse it with water to clean off debris but do not scrub the tooth.
3. Keep the tooth as moist as possible. If your child is old enough, have them place it between the cheek and gum. If not, simply wrap it in clean gauze soaked in milk or tap water.

It is a common occurrence for children to suffer injuries that knock out a tooth. Getting to the Summit, NJ general dentist quickly is your best chance for success. Be sure to remain calm and call the dentist right away with any problems.
